India Enforces Caller ID & Trademark Rulings 2026

From November 1, 2026 India will require all phone numbers to show a registered caller name, either a trademark or trade name, tightening consumer protection. Simultaneously, Delhi High Court rulings clarify trademark use in online ads and the limits on descriptive marks for heritage artifacts, while a new patent secures rapid molecular testing technology, reflecting broader IP enforcement trends.

India will make caller name display mandatory for all mobile numbers starting Nov 1 2026. The name must be a trademark registered in the subscriber’s name or a trade name on the Goods & Services Registry. Details can be found in the LiveChennai report and the Livemint analysis.

The Delhi High Court issued two important decisions:
- A ruling that using a registered trademark as a keyword to trigger ads counts as “use” of the mark, affecting digital advertising practices. See the full case at Mondaq.
- A judgment on “heritage artifacts” that cancels certain descriptive and composite trademarks, clarifying limits on such registrations. Full details also on Mondaq.

In a separate development, the University of Hyderabad and a Mumbai firm secured a patent for a rapid molecular testing technology, highlighting growing innovation in health diagnostics. Read more at the Times of India.
