India generates over 4 million tonnes of e-waste annually — making it the third-largest e-waste market globally. By 2026, the regulatory architecture is the E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022, which replaced the 2016 Rules and decisively shifted enforcement to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework: producers, manufacturers, importers, refurbishers, and bulk consumers of EEE (Electrical and Electronic Equipment) are now mandatorily responsible for end-of-life management of the equipment they place in the market.
The framework: E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022; Schedule I categorises EEE — IT & telecom equipment, consumer electronics, lighting, large appliances, small appliances, EEE in toys, medical devices, monitoring instruments; EPR Portal (eprwaste.cpcb.gov.in) for all transactions; EPR Targets escalating year-on-year (e.g., 60% in 2023-24, 70% in 2024-25, 80% in 2025-26 and onwards for many categories); EPR Certificates issued by registered Dismantlers / Recyclers / Refurbishers per kg of waste processed; Bulk Consumers (companies with >100 employees) must channel their e-waste to authorised dismantlers / recyclers.
