ISO Certification

ISO certification is third-party attestation that an organisation's management system conforms to a specific International Organization for Standardization standard. By 2026, ISO certification has moved well beyond 'a sticker on a tender document' — it is a substantive operating requirement for vendor onboarding with large enterprises and PSUs, a qualifying criterion for export markets and global supply chains, a frequent client and investor due-diligence demand, and in regulated sectors (medical devices, food, pharma, defence) often a de-facto licence to operate. The certificates that matter most for Indian businesses are ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety), ISO/IEC 27001:2022 (Information Security), ISO 22000 (Food Safety), ISO 13485 (Medical Devices) and ISO 50001 (Energy Management).

All current ISO management-system standards share the High Level Structure (HLS) under Annex SL — a common 10-clause framework covering context of the organisation, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, and improvement. This means a 9001 + 14001 + 45001 integrated management system can be built on a single backbone, with sector-specific add-ons layered on top — a major cost and effort reduction relative to the pre-2015 era. ISO/IEC 27001:2022, the current information-security standard, replaced the 27001:2013 version with a transition deadline that has now passed; organisations still on 2013 are out of conformity and the certificate, where it still appears, is not valid for new audits.

The certification path runs in five disciplined phases — gap analysis, system build & documentation, internal audit, management review, and the Stage 1 + Stage 2 certification audit by an accredited certification body (CB) under an IAF-recognised accreditation (NABCB in India, UKAS, ANAB, etc.). Many Indian businesses fall into the trap of buying low-cost 'certificates' from non-accredited CBs — the certificate is worthless for serious tenders, exports, or M&A diligence. We work only with NABCB / IAF-recognised CBs, build the management system to actually run the business, and make the audit a confirmation rather than a discovery.

The Standards That Matter — and What Each Demonstrates

• ISO 9001 — Quality Management:: The base standard. Customer focus, process approach, risk-based thinking, continual improvement. The qualifying credential for almost every B2B vendor onboarding in India and abroad.

• ISO 14001 — Environmental Management:: Environmental aspects and impacts, legal compliance evaluation, waste / water / energy management, emergency preparedness. Essential for manufacturers, infrastructure, mining, and any export to EU markets.

• ISO 45001 — Occupational Health & Safety:: Replaced OHSAS 18001 (transition completed 2021). Worker participation, hazard identification, OH&S risk control, incident investigation, worker safety culture. Core for manufacturing, construction, logistics.

• ISO/IEC 27001:2022 — Information Security:: Information Security Management System (ISMS) covering 93 Annex A controls in 4 themes (Organisational, People, Physical, Technological). The current version. Transitioned from 2013, which is now out of conformity. Required for IT services, BPO / KPO, fintech, healthtech, edtech.

• ISO 22000 — Food Safety:: Combines HACCP principles with management-system requirements; recognised globally; complementary to FSSAI for exporting food businesses.

• ISO 13485 — Medical Devices:: Quality management for design, manufacture and servicing of medical devices; aligned with regulatory requirements including India MDR 2017, EU MDR, US FDA QSR.

• ISO 50001 — Energy Management:: Systematic management of energy use; significant for energy-intensive manufacturing, real estate, hospitality.

The Five-Phase Certification Path

• Phase 1 — Gap Analysis:: Documented review of current practice against the standard's clauses; gap report with prioritised action plan.

• Phase 2 — System Build & Documentation:: Policy, scope, risk register, processes, procedures, work instructions, records — built on Annex SL backbone.

• Phase 3 — Internal Audit:: Trained internal auditor performs full clause-and-process audit; non-conformities raised and closed.

• Phase 4 — Management Review:: Top management reviews system performance, audit results, customer feedback, objectives, opportunities — formal minutes recorded.

• Phase 5 — Stage 1 + Stage 2 Certification Audit:: Stage 1 (documentation review, readiness assessment); Stage 2 (on-site implementation audit). Certificate issued for 3 years with annual surveillance audits.
