APEDA Registration

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), constituted under the APEDA Act, 1985, is the statutory export-promotion body for India's agro and processed-food export sector. For exporters of any product listed in the APEDA Schedule — fresh fruits and vegetables, processed fruits and vegetables, meat and meat products, poultry and dairy products, confectionery, biscuits and bakery, honey, jaggery and sugar products, cocoa products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, cereals, groundnuts, peanuts, walnuts, pickles, papad, chutneys, guar gum, herbal and medicinal plants, and floriculture — APEDA Registration-cum-Membership Certificate (RCMC) is mandatory before claiming any export benefit, and effectively before any commercially serious export.

By 2026, APEDA registration is fully online through www.apeda.gov.in, with the certificate issued in digital form and now valid for five financial years (in line with the FTP 2023 RCMC validity reform). The registration unlocks access to the full APEDA Financial Assistance Scheme — subsidies on packaging development, infrastructure, quality testing, brand development, transport assistance for perishable cargo, market development including international trade-fair participation, and air-freight subsidies for floriculture and selected horticulture exports. It also enables participation in APEDA's buyer-seller meets, virtual trade-fair platforms, and the Indian agri brand marquee programmes in identified focus markets.

Most rejections at first application happen because the exporter applied without IEC linkage, missed the bank-certificate format, applied under the wrong product schedule, or had GSTIN-PAN-IEC name mismatches. Eligibility and the APEDA Schedule

• Who Must Register:: Any exporter (manufacturer-exporter or merchant-exporter) of products listed in the APEDA Schedule. Exports without APEDA registration of scheduled products are non-compliant under Section 12 of the APEDA Act and disqualify the exporter from any APEDA scheme.

• Schedule Coverage in Brief:: Fresh F&V; processed F&V; meat & meat products; poultry & poultry products; dairy products; confectionery, biscuits, bakery; honey, jaggery, sugar products; cocoa products; alcoholic & non-alcoholic beverages; cereal preparations; groundnuts, peanuts, walnuts; pickles, papad, chutneys; guar gum; floriculture & herbal / medicinal plants; cashew (selected) and basmati & non-basmati rice through linked Boards.

• Cross-Schedule Exporters:: Exporters whose product portfolio spans both APEDA-scheduled and non-APEDA products typically maintain APEDA RCMC plus another RCMC (FIEO, MPEDA, Spices Board, Coffee Board, etc.) — multiple RCMCs are permitted under FTP 2023 and benefits are independently claimable.

What APEDA Registration Actually Unlocks

• Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS):: Reimbursement-based subsidies for packaging development, branded product registration in foreign markets, quality testing, integrated post-harvest handling infrastructure, transport assistance for perishables (sea / air freight), brand-building, market intelligence and trade-fair participation. Claim ratios vary by component — typically 25%-50% with monetary caps per beneficiary per year.

• Trade-Fair & Buyer-Seller Meets:: Subsidised participation in international agro and food trade fairs (Gulfood, SIAL, Anuga, Fruit Logistica, ProWein), reverse buyer-seller meets, and India Pavilion programmes — the most under-utilised but commercially most valuable APEDA benefit.

• Quality & Traceability Programmes:: Access to APEDA's traceability systems — GrapeNet (grapes), MeatNet, AnarNet (pomegranate), HortiNet, PeanutNet — mandatory for exports to EU and several developed markets. Registration is integrated with APEDA RCMC.

• Banking & FTP Linkages:: APEDA RCMC is the qualifying RCMC for RoDTEP scrip claims on agro / processed-food HS codes; banks recognise APEDA registration for export-finance facilitation.

Common Pitfalls We Pre-Empt

Wrong product-category mapping; bank certificate not in APEDA's prescribed format; PAN-IEC-GSTIN name mismatch; no Udyam / manufacturing licence for manufacturer-exporter category; missing FSSAI for processed food; subscription fee paid but not reflected on portal; DSC mismatch at filing.
