MSME Registration in India is now formally Udyam Registration under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, filed exclusively on the government portal udyamregistration.gov.in. Replacing the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) regime, Udyam is a fully Aadhaar-based, paperless, free-of-cost registration linked to PAN and GSTIN, with classification automatically derived from data fetched from the Income-Tax and GST systems. By 2026 it has become the single qualifying credential that unlocks the entire MSME benefit stack — Section 16 of the MSMED Act 2006 (45-day mandatory payment from buyers), priority sector lending, GeM seller preferences, public procurement reservations, additional benefits for SC / ST / women-owned MSEs, ZED / Lean / TEQUP scheme eligibility, and various interest-subvention and credit-guarantee schemes.
The classification framework was revised under the Atmanirbhar Bharat reforms and is now turnover-and-investment based — a composite criterion. Micro: investment in plant & machinery / equipment up to ₹1 crore and turnover up to ₹5 crore. Small: investment up to ₹10 crore and turnover up to ₹50 crore. Medium: investment up to ₹50 crore and turnover up to ₹250 crore. The enterprise must satisfy both limits — the higher trigger applies. Service and manufacturing enterprises are classified on the same scale (the earlier separate scales have been merged). Investment in plant & machinery is computed on the basis of WDV in the Income-Tax return; turnover is taken from the GST return, with export turnover excluded for the classification calculation.
Udyam Registration is filed by the proprietor / authorised signatory using their Aadhaar (OTP-verified) and the entity's PAN and GSTIN. Once filed, a Udyam Registration Number (URN) and a permanent e-certificate with QR code are issued instantly. Re-classification is automatic based on next-year's IT return and GSTR data — there is no need to re-apply. Mistakes at filing — wrong NIC code, wrong category claim, missed branches, no SC / ST / women-owned tag — silently shut off benefits the enterprise was entitled to. We file Udyam cleanly, link it to the relevant scheme entitlements, and put Section 16 (45-day payment) and ZED / GeM / priority-lending benefits to work.
