Phulkari Faces Challenges
Punjab's traditional embroidery Phulkari is facing challenges despite receiving the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2010. The challenges include:
- lack of awareness and marketing
- limited availability of raw materials
- high production costs,
Phulkari embroidery is a traditional art form of Punjab and is known for its intricate designs and patterns, it is made on various types of fabrics including cotton, silk and wool.
The GI tag is given to recognize the unique identity of a product and to protect it from being copied or replicated, however, the tag has not been able to boost the sales of Phulkari embroidery, the government and the artisans are working together to promote Phulkari and to increase its sales
