GST registration in West Bengal across Kolkata, Howrah, Siliguri jurisdictions. Jute, tea, leather, IT and SaaS exporters handled with LUT setup.
West Bengal sits at a strange intersection in India's GST map. You have one of the country's oldest wholesale corridors in Burrabazar, a tea and jute economy that pre-dates the GST law itself, a fast-growing IT and SaaS cluster in Sector V Salt Lake, and a land border with Bangladesh that carries more cross-border trade than most people realise. Registering for GST here is not a tick-box exercise.
Whether you run a Posta wholesale unit, a Darjeeling tea estate, a Park Street consultancy, or a Salt Lake SaaS company exporting to the US, the registration paperwork looks deceptively similar. What changes is what happens after the GSTIN arrives — and that's where most filings go wrong. The jurisdiction your business gets allotted to, the address proof you submit, and the sectoral classifications you pick at registration shape your refund timelines, audit exposure, and ITC flow for years.
The GST landscape has changed materially over the last 18 months. Before you apply, here's what affects West Bengal registrants right now.
The registration looks like a 30-minute online form. In practice, the work happens in what you submit and how you classify it.
Before touching the GST portal, we sit with you on turnover figures, the principal place of business, and where you actually do business. A Howrah factory with a Kolkata sales office is treated very differently from a single-PPOB Park Street consultancy. Sectoral nuances matter — tea, jute, leather, and pharma each carry their own HSN classification traps.
PAN, Aadhaar, photographs, bank details, MOA/AOA or partnership deed, and address proof all need to align. Burrabazar multi-floor addresses need the lease, electricity bill, NOC from landlord, and society NOC to match the floor and door number in the application. A Class-3 DSC is mandatory for companies and LLPs; proprietors can use Aadhaar e-Sign.
The application goes in via the GST portal. Aadhaar OTP authentication is the first fork — clear it and the timeline shrinks; fail it and you're routed to biometric. The ARN (Application Reference Number) is generated the same day and serves as your tracking ID throughout.
The portal tells you within 24-48 hours whether biometric is required. If yes, you book a slot at the nearest GST Suvidha Kendra — Kolkata has multiple, Siliguri and Asansol have one each. Carry the original Aadhaar, PAN, and a printout of the ARN acknowledgment. The in-person visit takes 20-30 minutes.
Officers can raise queries within 7 working days of ARN. Common ones in WB: address proof mismatch, photograph quality, bank account verification. Each query carries a 7-day response window; miss it and the application is rejected and you start again.
Once cleared, the 15-digit GSTIN is issued and the registration certificate is downloadable as Form REG-06. The PDF carries the principal and additional places of business, authorised signatories, and your turnover threshold category.
This is the part most filings skip. LUT for exporters (annual filing, FY-wise), e-invoicing setup if you'll cross ₹5 crore, ISD registration for branch ITC distribution, and the return calendar — GSTR-1 monthly or quarterly under QRMP, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9, and GSTR-9C if turnover exceeds ₹5 crore.
A Sector V SaaS startup, three founders, monthly recurring revenue of ₹18 lakh, billing US and Singapore customers.
Without registration, that ₹13 lakh of ITC would have been a sunk cost and US clients would have been billed 18% IGST loaded on top — killing the deal inside three quarters.
West Bengal's economy is sectorally dense. Picking the wrong HSN or skipping a parallel licence at registration creates years of cleanup work.
Pick the wrong HSN at registration and you're amending invoices for years.
Share your turnover figures for the last 12 months, the principal place of business, and a quick note on what you sell or supply. We assess in a 30-minute call whether you fall under the compulsory registration bracket, whether voluntary registration helps you, and which sectoral parallels (Tea Board, IEC, Drug Control, Jute Commissioner) apply alongside.
Once you decide to proceed, we pull the document pack, prepare the DSC if needed, file REG-01 the same day, and walk you through Aadhaar OTP. If biometric is triggered, we book the nearest GST Suvidha Kendra slot for you. From ARN to GSTIN, the working timeline is 7-15 days, and we hand over a configured post-registration setup so your first return cycle runs cleanly.
Kolkata CGST Zone versus WB State Tax Charge office picked correctly based on turnover and PIN code, so your refund and assessment files start at the right desk.
Burrabazar, Posta, and Bara Bazaar multi-floor address proofs handled with proper NOC, lease, and electricity bill alignment. Stops officer queries before they're raised.
Jute, tea, leather, and engineering exporters get HSN classification, LUT, RoDTEP and drawback eligibility, and AD bank coordination configured at registration itself.
Place of supply, LUT, ITC refund workflow, and OIDAR — set up at registration so IT and SaaS exporters bill US, UK, and Singapore clients at zero-rated GST from day one.
Kolkata HQ plus branch GSTINs across Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and the Northeast with ISD configured for common ITC distribution between head office and branches.
Petrapole, Phulbari, and Jaigaon land port trade with Bangladesh and Bhutan — IEC, AD bank, and customs registration aligned with GST so shipping bills clear without holdup.
Turnover, business model, principal place of business, and sectoral nuances confirmed in a working call. Takes one day.
