Register your business for GST online with Legal Suvidha. Get your GSTIN in 3-7 working days. Expert guidance on IMS and e-invoicing for FY 2026-27.
GST (Goods and Services Tax) registration gives your business a 15-digit GSTIN โ the legal licence to collect tax, claim input tax credit (ITC), and trade with registered buyers across India. Every business above the prescribed turnover threshold must register under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 (CGST Act). Skip it and you cannot legally charge GST on your invoices, your B2B buyers lose their ITC entitlement, and you face penalties under Section 122 of the CGST Act.
The entire process runs through the GST portal (www.gst.gov.in) โ no physical visits, no notarised documents. A complete application is approved in 3-7 working days; Aadhaar-authenticated filings can come through in as little as one working day. Getting the application right the first time โ correct HSN/SAC codes, PAN-matched details, valid address proof โ is what separates a clean 3-day approval from a 3-week back-and-forth with the assigned GST officer.
Three regulatory changes effective in FY 2026-27 directly affect new registrants from day one.
The GST registration process has seven distinct stages. Each one has a specific time window โ missing any of them adds days to your timeline.
We review your PAN card, Aadhaar, proof of business address, bank account documents, and constitution papers before opening the portal. The most common rejection trigger is a mismatch between the legal name on your PAN and the name on your incorporation certificate or partnership deed. We catch and resolve these before submission. If your turnover is close to the โน5 crore e-invoicing threshold, we also confirm your Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) integration at this stage.
On the GST portal, we enter your legal name, PAN, email address, and mobile number. The portal validates your PAN against the CBDT (Income Tax) database in real time. You receive a one-time password on your Aadhaar-linked mobile and email to confirm your identity. A Temporary Reference Number (TRN) is generated, valid for 15 days, to complete the Part B application.
Using the TRN, we complete the full registration form: principal place of business with the correct PIN code, nature of supply (goods, services, or both), HSN and SAC codes for each product or service category, details of all partners or directors, and bank account information. The HSN/SAC code selection determines your default GST rate and your e-invoicing obligation โ an error here creates downstream ITC disputes for your buyers.
An Aadhaar e-KYC authentication link is sent to the applicant's registered mobile. Completing it within 15 days of TRN generation activates faster officer processing. If the GST portal's risk engine flags your application for biometric verification, an appointment is scheduled at your nearest GST Seva Kendra. We brief you on exactly what documents to carry and what the officer will verify.
On successful submission, an Application Reference Number (ARN) is generated immediately on the portal. The assigned GST officer then has 7 working days โ or 3 days for Aadhaar-authenticated applications โ to approve, reject, or issue a query via Form GST REG-03. We track your ARN status daily throughout this window so you are never left wondering.
If the officer issues a Form GST REG-03 notice โ typically requesting a rent agreement, a utility bill with a matching address, or a no-objection certificate from the property owner โ you have 7 working days to respond via Form GST REG-04. We draft and upload the clarification within 24 hours of receiving the notice, giving the officer the complete documentation needed to approve without further delay.
Once approved, Form GST REG-06 (your GST Registration Certificate) is available for download from the portal. We set up your GST portal login, walk you through the IMS dashboard, map your HSN/SAC codes to your invoice template, and confirm your compliance calendar. If you export goods or services, we also initiate your LUT filing so you can ship under zero-rated supply from the very first dispatch.
Here is what the numbers actually look like for a typical first-time registrant.
The ITC chain is the backbone of GST compliance. Every business in that chain โ supplier, manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer โ depends on the one before it filing correctly and on time.
Registration is the start, not the finish. Here is what your GST compliance looks like once your GSTIN is live.
A GSTIN is not just a tax number โ it is your business's entry point into the formal B2B economy. Every ITC chain in India runs through it.
These are the eight mistakes that cause GST registration delays, rejections, and post-registration penalties โ and how each one plays out.
Upload your PAN card, Aadhaar card, a recent utility bill or registered rent agreement for your business premises, and a cancelled cheque or bank passbook to our secure document portal. A GST expert reviews your documents within 2 working hours and flags any issues โ name mismatches, incomplete address proof, missing authorisation letters for authorised signatories โ before your application is submitted to the GST portal. This pre-check is what prevents the officer queries and resubmissions that delay most applications.
Once your documents clear, we handle the complete Part A and Part B submission, track your ARN daily, and draft responses to any officer queries within 24 hours. Your GSTIN and registration certificate are sent to you as soon as the portal approves the application โ no follow-up calls or status checks required from your side.
Claim back the GST you pay on business purchases โ raw materials, services, freight โ and offset it against the tax you collect from customers. This prevents tax cascading and directly reduces your cost of goods sold.
Registered businesses require GSTIN-verified suppliers so they can claim ITC. Without a GSTIN, you are excluded from most B2B supply chains regardless of price or quality.
Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, and every other e-commerce aggregator in India require a valid GSTIN before onboarding you as a seller. Registration opens all these channels immediately.
Only a GST-registered business can legally supply goods or services across state lines. IGST on inter-state invoices flows through the GST network and is credited to the destination state automatically.
Registered exporters can ship goods or supply services under zero-rated supply by filing an annual LUT, avoiding upfront IGST payment and improving cash flow on all export contracts.
A GSTIN is required for bank loans, government tenders, and corporate vendor empanelment. It is the single credential that signals tax compliance to customers, lenders, and procurement officers.
We review all documents for name mismatches, address consistency, and completeness before the portal application opens. This pre-check eliminates the officer queries that add 7-10 days to most applications.
Legal name, PAN, email, and mobile are entered on the GST portal. PAN is validated against the CBDT database in real time, and OTP confirmation generates your Temporary Reference Number (TRN).
Using your TRN, we complete the business details form: principal place of business, HSN/SAC codes, nature of supply, partner or director details, and bank account information.
An Aadhaar e-KYC link is sent to the applicant's registered mobile. Completing it within 15 days activates faster processing. If biometric verification is required, we coordinate your GST Seva Kendra appointment.
Submission generates an Application Reference Number (ARN) immediately. We monitor the ARN daily and alert you if the officer raises a query, so no time is lost waiting for portal notifications.
If the GST officer issues a Form REG-03 notice, we draft and upload the clarification within 24 hours โ typically address proof, rent agreement, or NOC documentation โ keeping your application moving.
Once approved, your registration certificate (Form GST REG-06) is downloaded and your portal login is configured. We hand over your compliance calendar, HSN/SAC mapping sheet, and IMS onboarding guide.
